Tokyo is one of the most advanced and fascinating cities in Japan, Asia, and the world. Every year millions of visitors travel to this vibrant capital to experience its unique blend of ancient traditions and future-driven innovation. We visited Tokyo during Momiji-Gari, the fall season of red maple leaves, but this metropolis is worth exploring at any time of the year.
Below is your complete Tokyo travel guide, with key districts, main attractions and practical travel tips.
Tokyo is best understood through its neighbourhoods rather than individual landmarks. Each district has its own character, atmosphere, and style.
Ginza: Tokyo’s Luxury District
Ginza shines with upscale boutiques, department stores, and corporate offices of world-famous brands. It’s the perfect destination for luxury shopping and fine dining.
Akihabara: Anime Culture & Electronics
Known as the heart of otaku culture, Akihabara draws anime and gaming fans from around the world. The area is packed with electronics stores, manga shops, and themed cafés.
Harajuku: Creative Fashion & Traditional Spirit
Harajuku combines youthful street fashion with traditional Japanese elements. It’s one of the most colourful and iconic districts in the city.
Shibuya: Youth Culture & Nightlife
Famous for the Shibuya Crossing, this area is full of bars, cafés, shops, and entertainment venues. It’s Tokyo’s energetic centre of youth culture.
Where to Stay in Tokyo: Why We Chose Minato
We stayed in Minato City, a business and nightlife hub with excellent transport connections. From here it’s easy to reach the central station for day trips to Kyoto or Osaka and quick to access any major Tokyo attraction.
Top Attractions and Things to Do in Tokyo
Hamarikyu Park: Tea Ceremony with a View
We began our visit at Hamarikyu Park, where we enjoyed a traditional Japanese tea ceremony in the garden’s historic Tea House. The tranquil landscape is a perfect contrast to Tokyo’s modern skyline.
Asakusa & Sensō-ji Temple
Asakusa remains one of Tokyo’s most visited districts. Its highlight is Sensō-ji, the oldest Buddhist temple in the city, known for its striking architecture and vibrant atmosphere.
Nearby, you’ll find the Tokyo Skytree, Japan’s tallest structure, offering panoramic city views.
Odaiba & Tokyo Bay: Sunset Views and Modern Landmarks
To enjoy a breathtaking Japanese sunset, we headed to Odaiba, an artificial island connected to the city by the famous Rainbow Bridge.
Originally built as a set of fortresses (“daiba”) to protect Tokyo, the island is now a leisure zone with shopping malls, museums, and a replica of the Statue of Liberty, installed in 1998.
Imperial Palace Tokyo
Perfect for history lovers and photography enthusiasts, the Imperial Palace features vast gardens, moats, and scenic bridges. While famous in cherry blossom season, the palace gardens are just as spectacular during Momiji-Gari.
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
Located between Shibuya and Shinjuku, this garden is one of Tokyo’s most peaceful escapes. With its mix of Japanese, English, and French landscape styles, it becomes especially popular during cherry blossom and fall foliage seasons. Visiting early in the morning is recommended to avoid crowds.
